Westergasfabriek – Amsterdam’s Cultural Park

Swampgardens at WestergasTerrace

Located in a former gasworks, Amsterdam’s Westergasfabriek Culture Park is a special place where you can catch your breath – or let off steam – whatever the mood takes you. You’ll be hard-pressed to find a more diverse cultural offering and relaxed a vibe in Amsterdam than on the grounds of the Westergasfabriek.

Industrial monuments

Westergasfabriek

The Westergasfabriek was constructed in 1883 by the British Imperial Continental Gas Association. At the time it was the largest gas works in Amsterdam and originally the gas was mainly used for public lighting. Most of the Westergasfabriek buildings were designed by Isaac Gosschalk, in a variation on the 'Dutch Renaissance' style. After the discovery of natural gas in the 1960's, gas production was stopped and some of the buildings were demolished, while others served as storage. In 1989 the remaining buildings were officially recognised as industrial heritage monuments and the park were opened as a park in 2003.

Creative space

Pacific bar

The combination of the atmospheric industrial monuments and the tranquillity of the surrounding Westerpark make the Westergasfabriek a unique multifunctional space. There are all the things you expect to find in a spacious city park - trees, streams and playgrounds - and dozens of vibey event spaces, galleries, cafe’s, bars, restaurants, a theatre and even a cinema. Get up early and buy freshly-baked bread in De Bakkerswinkel – far too good to feed the park’s ducks with – or party on through the night in the Flex Bar. The Westerpark also has free tennis courts open to all.

All ages

Westergasfabriek's surroundings

The Westergasfabriek attracts many cultural types, but is also a favourite with families. Small children will be delighted by the petting zoo, and the Westerpark grounds are perfect for a picnic. The park hosts festivals, markets, performances and exhibitions to delight young and old throughout the year. The Westergasfabriek is just as exciting in winter as it is in summer. In the winter months, a plush circus tent treats adults to a gastronomic feast while they enjoy spectacular big-top performances. And the annual Cinekid festival - a film, television and new-media festival for children - is immensely popular too.

If you're looking for that “only in Amsterdam” experience, make sure to pay a visit to Westergasfabriek Culture Park!
