Amsterdam's De Nieuwe Kerk is famous for celebrating treasures from other countries, cultures and religions in its much talked-about exhibitions. Located on Dam Square next to the Royal Palace, the church is one of the most highly attended exhibition locations in the Netherlands. Once again, the church is offering a summer exhibition programme that is sure to delight visitors.

Cultural centre

Dating back to 1408, the Nieuwe Kerk or New Church is not really all that new - it's name comes from the fact that it was the second church built in Amsterdam, after what is conveniently now known as the Old Church proved to be too small to hold the city's growing parish. Today, the Nieuwe Kerk serves as a cultural centre, regularly hosting exhibitions, organ recitals and state occasions, like Prince Willem Alexander's and Maxima's wedding in 2002.

De Nieuwe Kerk is the most famous church in Amsterdam, and with good reason. This magnificent structure draws tens of thousands of visitors each year. Its rich history is revealed in a special documentary, an audio tour, guided tours behind the scenes, special thematic tours and a permanent exhibition in the "Wezengalerij".

 Wezengalerij

The exhibition explains the Nieuwe Kerk's long relationship with the city of Amsterdam, the Dutch Royal House (it is the site of weddings and inaugurations) and the Dutch State (it hosts the annual Remembrance Day celebrations on 4 May). Made possible by a donation from the Friends of De Nieuwe Kerk foundation, this interactive presentation incorporates text, images and sound recordings relating the church's colourful story . The Wezengalerij is accessible via the stairway in De Nieuwe Kerk shop (free of charge).
