Museum Quarter

The Nightwatch from Rembrandt van Rijn

Amsterdam is world-famous for its museums. The most renowned, such as the Rijksmuseum and Van Gogh Museum are conveniently located close to each other in the colourful Museum Quarter. This prestigious area is also bursting with unique shops, café’s and restaurants – making it a wonderful place to spend a day, or two!

Museum Quarter Attractions

Museumplein

Located near the Museumplein, the Museum Quarter (Museumkwartier) is certainly the place for culture vultures to be in Amsterdam. The quarter is home to the Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh museum, Concertgebouw (Concert Hall) and the Vondelpark. If that’s not enough, then there’s also the Dutch Film Museum and Coster Diamonds, which gives free tours of its factory, to amuse and amaze you. Most of the buildings in this attractive quarter are from the 19th century and both Museumplein and the Vondelpark are great for picnics and lazing on the grass.

Museum Quarter Shopping

Diamonds are a girl’s best friend

Put your sunglasses on and polish-up your credit card - the Museum Quarter’s shops are frequented by the Dutch glitterati and are as excellent for entertainment value as they are for finding a new pair of designer shoes. The P.C. Hooftstraat is home to all the up-market international brands like Gucci, Chanel and Louis Vuitton while the Van Baerlestraat beckons with top-end local brands like Pauw, Oilily and Vanilia. In the Jacob Obrechtstraat & Cornelis Schuytstraat you’ll find gorgeous little boutiques with very enticing storefront displays.

Museum Quarter Restaurants

Restaurants

You never need to be hungry in the Museum Quarter. From cosy café’s to plush eateries, you’ll see more residents than visitors eating out in this area. L'entrecôte et les dames is a great choice for carnivores –the restaurant’s concept is also a talking point. For a special dinner, Chang-I serves designer Chinese in an amazing interior by stylist Eric Kuster (Jimmy Woo). And Sama Sebo is the address to sample a traditional Indonesian rijsttafel or rice table.

Touring the quarter
