Library Lovers in Amsterdam

If you love books – and particularly libraries, then Amsterdam has some wonderful treats in store for you! The central public library is a stunning attraction in itself, but there are also some other fantastic book collections and reading rooms in surprising locations around the city. Bibliophiles, come discover Amsterdam’s spines.

Amsterdam’s Public Library

Amsterdam Public Library

Amsterdam boats Europe’s largest public library. The 28,000 m2 architecturally-striking structure is spread over seven floors – and you’ll want to explore them all. The library boasts a theatre, radio station, conference rooms, exhibition spaces, study pods, a reader’s café and a restaurant with a stunning outdoor terrace overlooking the city. The best bit could be the piano at the entrance where accomplished players give impromptu performances. The children’s floor is fabulous, with bean bags, soft books for babies and even a tree-house that kids can climb up to read!

Ets Haim - Livraria Montezinos

Ets Haim Jewish Library

Another very special Amsterdam treasure is Ets Haim - Livraria Montezinos, the oldest functioning Jewish library in the World. The collection is listed with UNESCO. Ets Haim is home to many unique books and documents that are of great value in both Jewish and Dutch history and culture. Of the 20,000 volumes, roughly 65% are in Hebrew. The Library has over 500 manuscripts dating back to 1282 and 30,000 printed works dating back to 1484—including works by 17th century philosopher Benedict de Spinoza.

De Pinto House Library

De Pinto House

An absolute treat for library-lovers is the De Pinto House Library. Built in 1651, this was formerly the home of a wealthy Jewish Portuguese merchant, De Pinto. Amsterdam’s residents would talk about being “as rich as de Pinto” and there was public disappointment when the building's 1975 restoration revealed that the walls were not covered in gold coins as alleged by urban legend. The library has a wonderfully ornate reading room, with a grand piano – and Old Masters on the ceilings!

Travelling Library

Tropical Museum

If you are preparing for a trip abroad, you’ll find all the information you need at the Tropenmuseum’s museum library. There are books and magazines about various countries and also about cookery, travel and music. Once you’re on the fly, pay a visit to the world’s first Airport Library at Schiphol airport. Browse translations of Dutch literature, films and music while waiting for your flight. You won’t be able to check the books out, but they should provide some inspiration and a good impression of Dutch culture.

Bookworms will be delighted by Amsterdam’s stunning reading rooms and libraries! Go browsing today!
