Adjacent to the Centrum is the lively Westerpark district. The area derives its name from the modern park, where it seethes with energy. Head to Westerpark and you'll find trendy cafés, charming eateries, cutting-edge galleries, a cinema and an avant garde club.
There's always plenty to do at Westerpark, the site of the city's former gasworks. Go to De Bakkerswinkel for breakfast, high tea or a sandwich with traditional bread in relaxed surroundings. A little further on you'll find Pacific Parc, where you can eat, drink and dance from morning till late. Savour Algerian dishes at nomadic restaurant Raïnaraï with its terrace on the quayside. Another popular terrace is that at WestergasTerras with its cascading pond, the eatery also boasts a cosy interior with fireplace for when the sun goes down. Make a day of it and take in a film at Het Ketelhuis, a unique cinema primarily showing Dutch (but also English) films.
A little further on past Culture Park Westergasfabriek, on the Watertorenplein, is Café-Restaurant Amsterdam in a cavernous engine room from 1900. An unusual place serving tasty and inexpensive food.
Architecture fans can learn about the Amsterdam School style of architecture at Museum Het Schip on the Spaarndammerplantsoen. The building itself is an architectural highlight. The old post office with its extraordinary interior was designed by Michel de Klerk, as were the Arbeiderspaleizen (‘Workers’ Palaces’) in the area.
On the longitudinal dike between the River IJ and the Houthavens (‘Timber Docks’) - and alongside historic gems like the Graansilo (‘Grain Silo’) and the Stenen Silo (‘Stone Silo’) - is an unusual modern building: Silodam. It was designed by renowned architects MVRDV and looks like a giant Jenga cube on the water.
