Centrum

Canalhouses in Amsterdam

Beyond Amsterdam’s best known sights and attractions are hidden gems just waiting to be discovered, such as a host of quirky musuems, charming and fabulous shopping districts, fantastic antiques, a thriving Chinatown and a Central Library with plenty of foreign language titles.

Canalside museums

Museum Van Loon
Centrum, historic heart

In Amsterdam’s Centrum you will of course find the magnificent canals, but there is so much more besides. The inner city, for instance, is bursting with interesting museums, sometimes hidden behind beautiful canalside façades.

Shopping

There are also wonderful markets to stroll round, such as the Noordermarkt, where many a stylist buys his clothing for photo shoots. At any rate shopping is a treat as soon as you stray from the beaten track. Get lost in the Jordaan or in the Negen Straatjes (‘Nine Streets’) – lanes that link the canals and where the most exclusive and original shops can be found, just like in the Haarlemmerstraat and Haarlemmerdijk.

Art, catering and the Public Library

Public Library Amsterdam

In the Spiegelkwartier(‘Mirror District’) the buying art lover will be in his element: virtually every building houses a gallery. Various catering establishments can be found on the lively Zeedijk, the domain of the Chinese, who even have a temple here. Not far from this street, on the other side of Central Station, the Openbare Bibliotheek (‘Public Library’) is located in an enormous and impressive building. A must, if only for the phenomenal view of the city.
