A city of surprises

As well as Lelystad’s modern architecture, other popular attractions include the nearby Oostvaardersplassen nature reserve, the popular outlet mall Batavia Stad and Aviodrome. This aerospace museum is located near the city’s airport and has been open since 2003, allowing plane lovers of all ages to get up close to, or even inside, many famous flying machines.

Mutiny on the high seas

As for the old merchant ship the Batavia, it crashed into a reef off the shores of western Australia during its maiden voyage in 1629. What happened after that is a fascinating bit of Dutch history. The Batavia’s crew was beset by mutiny and murders before another ship arrived to rescue those who had survived all the mayhem. The replica is on show all year round.
