Windmill Route
A century ago, the Netherlands boasted nearly ten thousand working windmills! They were used for draining land, milling grain, pressing oil or cutting wood. With the introduction of steam-power and later diesel and electricity, windmills slowly started disappearing from the Dutch landscape. Today, there are only around 1200 windmills left in the country, but these are lovingly preserved and maintained.
