The windmills of the Zaanse Schans
Windmills might just be the most defining icons of the Dutch landscape. Centuries ago, thousands of windmills were spread across the North and West parts of the Netherlands. Windmills helped shape the Dutch landscape as we see it today - they were often used to drain lakes and reclaim land from the sea. But windmills also played a crucial role in industry and production. They processed wood for shipbuilding and ground raw materials for the production of flour, dye, oil, paper and spices. The fishing villages of Volendam and Marken
Before the salty Zuiderzee was transformed into the freshwater IJsselmeer in the 1930s, its coast was lined with dozens of traditional fishing villages. The charming villages of Volendam and Marken look much like they did back when fishing was their primary source of income. Today tourism has become more crucial than catching fish, but that doesn’t spoil the enchanting green-timbered houses, villagers in traditional costume, lively ports and excellent seafood restaurants.

Dutch cheese is world-famous, and for good reason. It’s delicious! Many small Dutch cheese producers keep the old traditions alive by crafting their delicacies using artisanal methods. Some of them welcome visitors and offer interesting interactive demonstrations, including free cheese tastings of course!
Wooden shoes or clogs also represent a fundamental part of Dutch tradition. They continue to be popular in certain trades, especially with farmers working on soggy fields. Despite no longer being “fashionable”, many people still find them very functional and are proud to wear them in their daily lives. You can still see a renowned clog maker demonstrating their traditional skills in Marken.
