A delicious introduction to the Netherlands
The Zaanse Schans is one of the highlights of the Netherlands and is only a short distance from Amsterdam. Take a trip back in time and experience how the community lived by visiting the windmills, museums and green houses. The moment you arrive you will smell the cocoa. Find out about the history of cacao and chocolate in the region by visiting Zaansgedaan|Cacaolab and Zaans Museum.
The art of chocolate-making
The Cacaolab is based in an old barn close to the river Zaan and the windmills. This is where cocoa beans have been crushed to make chocolate for two centuries. Your group can learn about the art of chocolate-making (surrounded by the blissful scent of cocoa!) and find your favourite of the 130 different types of chocolate. Taste traditional hot chocolate, take part in a workshop and make sure you purchase some treats to take home.
A piece of Dutch history
At the Zaans Museum and historic cocoa factory, you can learn more about the stories of the people; their lives, work and the industrial heritage of the area. The Verkade Experience in the heart of the museum brings the food industry to life. You can picture yourself in a chocolate and biscuit factory dating from the early 20th century and even create your own wrapper for a chocolate bar.
