De P.L. Kramerbrug

The P.L. Kramer Bridge was designed by architect Piet Kramer while he worked as the aesthetic advisor for the Municipality of Amsterdam in the early 1920s. This bridge built in the style of the Amsterdam School, goes over the Noorder Amstel canal next to the Amsteldijk.

Bridge designed in the style of the Amsterdam School

The Amsterdam School architects fixated on the tradition of bridge construction and were attentive to the design of the bridges, special projects and council housing. Kramer designed more than 200 bridges throughout the city, which can be seen all over the city, for example in the Leidsestraat, the Vijzelstraat, the Stadhouderskade, and also in the Amsterdamse Bos. The bridges are recognizable from the master iron work and fanciful sculpture of Hildo Krop. The P.L. Kramer bridge, this bridge has a little artisanal bridge house and is adorned with multiple of Krop’s sculptures; towards the base of the bridge, figures of seals and knights protect the Amstel.
