Walter Süskind

The Hollandsche Schouwburg hosts an exhibition about the life of Walter Süskind (1906-1945), head of Jewish staff at the Schouwburg, when it functioned as Amsterdam's main deportation centre for Jews during the Holocaust. Süskind helped a large number of children and adults escape deportation.

Resistance from within

Born in 1906 in Germany, Süskind emigrated to the Netherlands in 1938. His position as director at the Schouwburg enabled him to work for the resistance from within, and to help large numbers of people escape from the Schouwburg - especially many children, who were held in the so-called 'creche' opposite the Schouwburg.

A life story

The exhibition features material that tells Süskind's story such as family photos and everyday objects. The exhibition is coinciding with the release of a Dutch feature film about Süskind's life.
