Van Gogh's Studio Practice: Reused Canvases

View:
Vincent van Gogh, Mand met viooltjes, 1886 (Vincent van Gogh Stichting)

Vincent van Gogh regularly painted on canvasses that he had used previously, hence painting over earlier paintings. He began this practice while living in Nuenen (The Netherlands) and continued doing so far into his Paris years (1886-1888).

Hidden works

This exhibition looks at Van Gogh's Studio practice in the context of major research conducted by the museum on the subject. The exhibition shows how modern techniques were used to examine paintings including Nude Girl, Seated, Self-portrait with Pipe, View from Theo's Apartment and Basket of Pansies, bringing the hidden paintings underneath back to life.
