This Isn't a Novel, this is an Indictment!

Multatuli - lithografie door August Allebé (1874)
Max Havelaar
150 years have passed since Multatuli wrote his acclaimed Max Havelaar, a work of extraordinary literary quality that also had enormous social and political impact. The book is included in the Dutch Canon.

Writing history
De Ruyter, based in Amsterdam, published the book on 15 May 1860. Multatuli, pseudonym for Eduard Douwes Dekker (1820-1887), wrote the book to shed light on the abuse he witnessed while working as a civil servant in Dutch India between 1838 and 1856.

Timeless
The exhibition highlights the political, social and literary importance of Max Havelaar and the indictment of oppression - a message that remains topical a century and a half later. The original manuscript is also on display. The exhibition is a collaboration between The University of Amsterdam?s Special Collections and the Multatuli Association.
