First solo exhibition in the Netherlands by Stefanos Tsivopoulos (Greece 1973, lives and works in Amsterdam). His recent work deals with the subjective character of film and looks at how our collective memory is shaped by the way in which mass media represent reality.
Tsivopoulos examines the role of memory and subjective interpretation by reconstructing real-life events in his works. His goal is to reveal an in-between way of perception that he calls 'documentary fiction'.
The exhibition includes Tsivopoulos' recent work Lost Monument: an installation about a controversial three-metre-high statue of former US president Harry S Truman in Athens. The statue is located close to the Acropolis and the Greek parliament. Ever since it was unveiled in 1963 to commemorate the implementation of the Truman Doctrine (a key event in the country's recent political history), the statue has been a popular target for discontent citizens.
