Presented by wooden actors, The Magic Flute is an exotic adventure: a classic story of the struggle between good and evil set in the realm of the imagination, populated by princes and princesses, dragons and exotic birds.
Die Zauberflöte
Mozart wrote The Magic Flute (Die Zauberflöte) for a small theatre in a suburb of Vienna. It's a tale that grew out of his fascination with the genre of 'magic opera' which combines magical theatrical effects and elements of puppetry. It was written in German instead of the aristocratic Italian that was customary for the period to allow the masses to empathise with the grief of Princess Pamina and laugh about the jokes and antics of the bird catcher Papageno.
The Amsterdam Marionette Theatre
The Amsterdam Marionette Theatre's production of The Magic Flute matches the intimacy that Mozart had in mind. The piece was recorded with a small ensemble, playing instruments from Mozart's time. Of course, the transverse flute (the magical wooden flute) takes the lead role.
