The Karnatic Lab

View:

Karnatic's history
Said to be one of the oldest forms of music in the world, Karnatic (often 'Carnatic') music is Indian classical music derived from the Southern part of India. Distinct from Hindustani classical music from North India, Karnatic is based around the voice and vocal patterns. Beyond the voice however you're likely to hear bamboo flute, violin, mridangam (a cylindrical barrel drum) and the vina (similar to a sitar), flowing through polyrhythms, rising through scales and progressing through improvisation.

East meets west
The Karnatic Lab series, based at the Badcuyp Centre for Music is a collection of musicans led by Ned McGowan and Gijs Levelt who blend modern world and contemporary music with Karnatic music. Spacious, via the traditional rise and fall of the melodic vocal patterns, the Karnatic Lab series allows room for western influences to weave their way throughout the music. The Karnatic Lab collective call upon other western contemporary musicians and composers to play pieces and contribute to the musical exchange either through prepared or improvised work throughout the concert series.

Lab results
They've programmed contemporary, electronic, jazz, improvised, not to mention the many worldly types of folk, all with diverse and intriguing results. It's through this improvisation and experimentation that styles and ideas are fine-tuned for both the Karnatic Lab Records label as a physical output, and in the past with Karnatic Lab Festival where these fine-tuned ideas are expressed on stage.
