The Immortal Alexander the Great

Alexander - Hermitage
The third major exhibition at the Hermitage Amsterdam, 'The Immortal Alexander the Great', opens on 18 September and runs until spring 2011.

Warrior, leader, inspiration

Alexander the Great appeals to the imagination like no other. If the history books are to be believed, he was a fierce warrior, a valiant leader and an inspiration to all that followed. From Greece in the west to the River Indus in the east, his empire was vast - the greatest empire in antiquity.

Beyond the earthly

Alexander the Great's fame lives on far beyond his death, ensuring his immortality. He became an inspirational figure for countless European, Russian and Islamic rulers and after his demise, paintings, tapestries and decorative art depicted Alexander's life and history.

Exhibits

This extensive exhibition covers all aspects of Alexander the Great's life, featuring an enormous array of exhibits of both Western and non-Western origins, dating from classical antiquity right up to the modern days.

Erwin Olaf

Dutch photographer Erwin Olaf provides an intriguing addition to the exhibition. Olaf photographed and filmed several objects from the exhibition that bear Alexander's features to then morph them with images of a male model, bringing out Alexander's characteristics and his beauty in an original and exciting manner and bringing the immortal Alexander back to life.

Allard Pierson Museum

A complementary exhibition entitled 'Alexander's Legacy - Greeks in Egypt' runs in the Allard Pierson Museum and is concerned with the traces Alexander and Hellenism left in the culture of Ancient Egypt. Both shows together are sure to offer an ideal overview of the life and influence of this important historical figure.

I amsterdam Card

Holders of the I amsterdam Card can see the Hermitage exhibition for an entry fee of just 3 euros, and the Allard Pierson show is entirely free - so you certainly don't need much to get your Alexander fix.
