Ballet lovers rejoice: this autumn, the world's most-loved ballet will once again be performed in Amsterdam.
Love and deception
Known as the 'ballet of ballets', Swan Lake deals with two of the great themes of humanity: love and deception. For the upcoming production, the former artistic director of the Dutch National Ballet Rudi van Dantzig draws his chief inspiration from Tchaikovsky for his arrangement.
Human interpretation
Van Dantzig has kept to the traditional movements of the 'standard' version by Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov, which dates from 1895, but has opted for a less superficial, more human interpretation. Toer van Schayk's imposing decors and costumes look as if they have been directly derived from the Golden Age Dutch Masters paintings.
