Amsterdam's Mediamatic presents Sur Place, an exhibition that delves into the fixed gear subculture. The multimedia exhibition runs from 8 May to 22 August, 2010.
Giro d'Italia
Fixed gear bikes do precisely what it says on the tin, they have one gear and not much else. The exhibition offers an insight into the fast-growing urban subculture and also pays homage to the origins of the vehicle. The opening on the 8th of May coincides with the start of the Giro d'Italia in Amsterdam.
Fixed-gears are going places
Track cyclists have always raced on fixed gear bikes. Bike messengers embraced the bike for street use years ago, and recently young creatives are increasingly attracted to its beauty and speed.
Cycle culture
Enthusiasts design their own fixed gear bikes and play bike polo in deserted parking lots. The Mediamatic exhibition keeps the pedals at rest or, in bike language, sur place, and reserves four months to offer the audience a taste of this multifaceted cycle culture.
Multimedia exhibition
The exhibition is staged as an indoor track. In addition to a collection of fabulous fixed gear bikes, there are objects, movies, documentaries and multimedia installations portraying the passion and sense of freedom shared by riders.
