Amsterdam's Allard Pierson Museum sails back in time to bring Roman ships and ports back to life in an impressive new exhibition that opens on 26 June.
To the seas!
Sea trade was booming like never before in Roman times with hundreds of tonnes of goods being shipped every week. And it wasn't just goods that were on the move; tourists were also grabbing the chance to hitch a ride. And in the water-rich Northern Provinces such as the Netherlands, shipping was especially important with the rivers being put to full use.
Travel back in time
Walk along gangways and lean over railings to view original blueprints, period exhibits, models of ships and a host of reconstructions that all recreate the magnificent Roman merchant era. Sail Rome! runs until 23 August.
