Art lovers generally agree that Rembrandt's etchings are the highlight of his oeuvre. They are in awe of his liberated sketching style, the dramatic lighting effects and daringly experimental etching technique. Museum het Rembrandthuis in Amsterdam celebrates the master's etchings in Rembrandt in Mirror Image, an exhibition that runs from 11 December 2009 to 23 March 2010.
Universe in reverse
Despite the comparatively small scale of Rembrandt's etchings, they often equal the size of his paintings. It is easy to forget that Rembrandt's final prints are actually a mirror image of what the artist conceived with the etching needle in his hand. However, this didn't hold Rembrandt back when creating his etchings, he could etch 'in reverse' on a copper plate with the same ease and confidence with which he approached a sheet of drawing paper.
New perspective
This is the first time that Rembrandt's major etchings will be displayed alongside their mirror images, affording us the unique chance to view the masterpieces exactly as Rembrandt conceived them and gain fresh insights into his creative process.
