Pieter Aertsen - Turning the World Upside Down

Pieter Aertsen, De eierdans, 1551
Aertson in Amsterdam
The Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam presents an intriguing exhibition of work by 16th-century Dutch artist Pieter Aertsen. After a lengthy absence, a collection of Aertsen's work will return to the Rijksmuseum for the exhibition which runs from 2 February until 19 April.

Visual feast
Aertsen is best known for his depictions of altarpiece scenes and partying peasants, while he is also renowned for painting some of the first still lifes. His work is a true feast for the eyes, as he expertly brings the incidental to the fore and flips conventions with a flick of his brush.
