Artists from all over the globe respond to the question dominating modern society: what is normal and who decides that? The Beurs van Berlage in the heart of Amsterdam tackles the question in Niet Normaal (Not Normal), an exhibition that runs from 16 December 2009 to 7 March 2010.
Perfection?
While technology and social advance open up a world of opportunities, uniformity reigns supreme. Markets and media increasingly determine how we view ourselves and others.
Perfection is the norm.
But how do we define this norm and who actually comes up to scratch? And what is failure: a wrinkle, a bout of depression, someone who lacks ambition, false teeth, taking pills to improve intelligence, major plastic surgery?
Acclaimed artists
The exhibition includes paintings, sculptures and installation art by numerous acclaimed artists including Marlene Dumas, Viktor & Rolf, Aernout Mik, Thomas Hirschhorn, Nathalie Djurberg, Marc Quinn and Louise Bourgeois. New works have been commissioned especially for the exhibition and artworks have been borrowed from foreign as well as private collections.
Parallel programme
Graphic arts will also be complemented by a varied programme of events including debates, film evenings, readings and parties. Niet Normaal sees the fusion of art and science in an exhibition and parallel programme that promises to be as inspiring as it is confrontational.
