New York Times Magazine Photographs

Amsterdam's Foam exhibits the best works from the rich creative history of photography in The New York Times Magazine. For more than 30 years, the magazine has been exploring a myriad of possibilities and applications of photography.

Journalism and fine art

The exhibition reflects on and explores the nature of both photography and print magazines at this pivotal moment in their history and evolution. Publishing photography both in journalistic contexts and as stand-alone fine art, the magazine occupies a unique position as a setting for visual storytelling and a forum for the cross-pollination of photographic genres.

Witness the creative process

The projects that are featured in the exhibition mirror The New York Times Magazine's eclecticism; there are seminal examples of reportage and portraiture, as well as fine art photography. Using visual materials drawn from different stages of the commissioning process - shot lists, work prints and contact sheets, videos, tear sheets, and framed prints - the magazine's collaborative methods, from initial idea to the published page, are revealed.

Co-curators

The exhibition is co-curated by Kathy Ryan, long-time photo editor of the magazine, and Lesley A Martin, publisher of Aperture Books.
