Amsterdam's Rijksmuseum presents a groundbreaking new exhibition that showcases the work of Joan Miró (1893-1983) alongside the earlier works that inspired him. Miró & Jan Steen runs from 15 June to 13 September, 2010.
Inspirational works
Whilst visiting Amsterdam in 1928, Miró took in the sights of the Rijksmuseum and drew inspiration from seventeenth-century artists Hendrick Sorgh and Jan Steen to produce three original works.
Linking past and present
These paintings represent the pinnacle of Miró's early surrealist oeuvre. This is the first time that these works and Miró's preparatory sketches will be displayed alongside the inspirational 17th century paintings.
