Michiel van Musscher (1645-1705)

View:
Zelfportret Michiel van Musscher, 1673

This exhibition is dedicated to Michiel van Musscher (1645 - 1705), a Golden Age master that counted Gabriel Metsu and Adriaen van Ostade amongst his tutors. As the 17th century came to a close, Michiel van Musscher was Amsterdam's most successful portrait artist.

Musscher in demand

Alongside painting portraits of Amsterdam high society, Michiel van Musscher also received commissions from foreign dignitaries including Tsar Peter the Great. Painted in the tradition of Van Dyck and Van Mieris, Van Musscher's portraits display a meticulous attention to detail that reflects the artist's skill.

Private collections

The exhibition includes famous works from the museum's own collection, works loaned from domestic and international museums as well as works from private collections not normally open to the public.
