Love in Wartime

Joods echtpaar

Love is often said to take on greater intensity during times of conflict and upheaval. World War Two influenced the love lives of a whole generation - butterflies in stomachs could be felt in the air raid shelters, in the trenches and even in the concentration camps. Love in Wartime at Amsterdam's Dutch Resistance Museum sensitively addresses this often-neglected human aspect of the war.

Cause for passion

Prolonged periods of boredom either while in hiding or serving in the resistance forces gave rise to passion and many argue that the threat of death brings cupid into action. Love and passion kept people going during wartime, perhaps more so due to the reduced authority of the law and weakened social control. Men were often far from home, as soldiers or in forced labour. Prostitution flourished, illegitimate relationships proliferated, and many complained of moral degeneration.

Love comes in many forms

This exhibition examines love in many forms: love that arises when people are doomed to remain together, love that provides the strength to stay alive, relationships with the enemy and love in return for money. This fascinating exhibition features photos, love letters, improvised wedding garments and film and audio recordings to portray the countless love stories that arose during wartime.
