From the end of the nineteenth century until the inter-war years, the infant medium of photography experienced its first international artistic movement: Pictorialism.
Pictorial magic
In parallel with the move from realism to modernism in the painting of the time, photographers began to focus on reproducing light, mood and atmosphere. They produced amazingly expressive images using unusual processes and printing techniques.
Building on tradition
In Atmospheric Light showcases how acclaimed Dutch photographers including Adriaan Boer, Bernard Eilers and Berend Zweers continued to build on local traditions from seventeenth and nineteenth-century painting.
Life through a lens
Portraits with a Rembrandtesque light, still lifes, landscapes and everyday scenes of urban life are all recaptured through the lens in this exhibition.
