Tour of the Hendrick Avercamp exhibition: IJspret (Fun on the Ice). The exhibition addresses all aspects of Avercamp: from winter clothing and ice-based games to Hendrick Avercamp's painting and sketching techniques.
Fun on the Ice
Hendrick Avercamp (1585-1634) is the most renowned Dutch seventeenth-century winter landscape painter. He is celebrated as the first Dutch artist to specialise in painting winter landscapes featuring fun on the ice.
An enduring influence
Four hundred years later, our image of the harsh winters of the Golden Age is still heavily influenced by Avercamp's ice portraits, characterised by minute narrative details of skating couples, children pelting each other with snowballs or the poor soul who has fallen through the ice.
