One of Africa's superstars comes to Amsterdam's Melkweg as part of the venue's new Shuffle.Play programme.
Traditional and modern elements
With his blend of Mali's rich musical traditions and modern blues and pop elements, Habib Koité is one of Africa's most popular musicians. His sparkling, virtuoso guitar playing and soft, melodic singing add to the universal appeal of the musician. Support by Fatoumata Diawara.
Afro-Latin special
Tonight's Afro-Latin special offers two nights in one: while Koité plays the Max, ticket holders can also sneak over to the performance of Cuban masters Sierra Maestra in Melkweg's Oude Zaal. A great opportunity to explore the differences and the similarities of Cuban and African music, styles that have been mutually influencing each other for centuries.
Shuffle.Play
The concerts are part of Melkweg's Shuffle.Play programme, their 'platform for cool music from all over the world' that celebrates the breaking down of cultural borders in times of globalisation, challenges its audience to explore the lesser-known and aims to defeat the tired old label of 'world music'.
