Forgotten Wood

Vergeten hout
You'd be forgiven for thinking that there are only two wooden houses left in Amsterdam. If numerous guide books are to be believed, the only two addresses where you can see these wooden marvels in the city are Zeedijk 1 and Begijnhof 34.

Hidden houses

Forgotten Wood at Museum Amsterdam Noord is here to set things straight. Because, in fact, around 160 wooden houses are hiding away just across the River IJ on Amsterdam Noord. Many of these houses have ornate facades, reminiscent of their brick cousins alongside Amsterdam's canals.

Into the limelight

The wooden houses on Amsterdam Noord were built before the area officially became part of Amsterdam and hence were never written into the city's history (and guide) books. This exhibition brings these forgotten houses back into the limelight where they belong.

On your bike!

If you fancy getting out and about, Museum Amsterdam Noord are also organising special cycle tours taking in the wooden houses. Forgotten Wood runs until 24 November.
