First Light - Photography & Astronomy

First Light - Image: Hubble Space Telescope, Central Region of the Carina Nebula, NASA, ESA
Photographing the unknown
Astronomers have been exploring the limits of human perception using photography since the nineteenth century. Those limits were surpassed once and for all with the arrival of space travel and satellites.

Understanding the incomprehensible
In photographs, the seemingly infinite size of the universe is reduced to human proportions, yet it remains an elusive idea.

Through the ages
This exhibition comprises a never-before-seen combination of unique historical astronomic photographs drawn from Dutch collections and present-day images made by famous telescopes and space probes such as ESO, Hubble and Cassini.
