Don Carlo

View:
Don Carlo

Composer Giuseppe Verdi masterfully transformed Friedrich Schiller's conceptual drama into one of the world's favourite operas. De Nederlandse Opera brings the opera back to Amsterdam with musical director Yannick Nézet-Séguin and director Willy Decker at the helm.

Politics & emotional conflicts

Don Carlo brilliantly combines crowd scenes with sharply-honed individual portraits while intelligently interweaving universal political themes with the emotional conflicts of the main characters.

Unrequited love

The opera tells the story of the Spanish crown prince's unrequited love for Elisabeth of Valois, his affection thwarted by political intrigue. This is set against the backdrop of the military confrontations between Spain and the Netherlands as well as the terror of the Inquisition.
