International acclaim
Retrospective of work by Indian photographer Dayanita Singh (New Delhi, 1961). She has received international acclaim for the highly expressive and poetic quality of her photographs and received a Prins Claus Fund Award in 2008. The award honoured her sharp-sighted vision on modern life in India and her introduction of new aesthetics into Indian photography.
From photojournalism to art
Originally trained as a photojournalist at New York's International Center of Photography (ICP), Singh continuously tried to find her own voice as an artist, aiming to build and express a personal relationship with the subjects. Recently, she has devoted an increasing amount of time to still lifes and (urban) landscapes.
Concern for composition
Singh's shift in artistic focus went hand in hand with one in 'hardware' - she works with a Hasselblad camera, which has a square format. This forces the user to observe and photograph in a different way: more slowly and precisely and with greater concern for composition, cropping, detail and light.
