Cuny Janssen - My Grandma was a Turtle

My Grandma was a Turtle is the latest project by acclaimed photographer Cuny Janssen. The exhibition runs at the Foam_Fotografiemuseum in Amsterdam for one month from 2 April 2010.

The Turtle clan
The intriguing title of the project refers to the Turtle clan of the matriarchal Indian tribe from Delaware, Oklahoma. In 2008, Janssen visited Bartlesville in Oklahoma to photograph children with Native American grandparents.

Ancestral likeness
Janssen's initial interest in the project stemmed from curiosity as to the extent to which modern Native American children still resemble their ancestors. Her portraits and landscape photos are timeless, unprejudiced and characterised by a subtle lyricism.
