Cory Arcangel - Depreciated

Cory Arcangel's nieuwste werk (fragment): Drei Klavierstücke, Op. 11' (2009)
Though Cory Arcangel may sound like that lame magician that possibly once dated Britney Spears, he's not. A Brooklyn-based artist, Cory is best known for his manipulation of 8-bit game cartridges like that of Super Nintendo's Super Mario Bros. Obscure, irreverent, futile and silly are all probably words that have been used to describe Arcangel's work, but no doubt, brilliant, hypnotizing and hilarious have also been used and as a result he's shown at places like MoMA, MCA Chicago and Migros Museum in Zurich.

Super Mario Weird
Take for example his 'Super Mario Clouds' where he hacked into the groundbreaking and much-loved '80s video game and removed everything but the pixelated white and fluffy, slow moving clouds against an iridescently sharp blue sky. They hypnotise as they move across the screen. Or similarly, 'Super Mario Movie' that, via game-manipulation, is a short animated film that tells the tale of a corrupted gaming world in which Mario questions his existence - Kind of like The Matrix but in 8-bit. Or the game 'I Shot Andy Warhol' which takes the shooting video game Hogan's Alley and replaces the usual targets with images of Pope John Paul II, Andy Warhol and Public Enemy's Flava Flav.

Depreciated
Running until 14 November, his first exhibition in the Netherlands, Depreciated, shows 'Super Mario Clouds', 'Structural Film' and his latest work 'Drie Klavierstucke Op 11', originally a piano piece written by Austrian Composer Arnold Schoenberg in 1909, reproduced via Youtube clips of cats walking on pianos. Expect other past experiments and artworks to boot.
