Christmas at the Rijksmuseum

Anoniem, Maria als Mater Dolorosa (ca. 1500-1510)
This year, the Rijksmuseum celebrates Christmas with several magnificent wooden and painted Madonnas. Six spectacular sculptures have been donated from the last large private collection of medieval art in the Netherlands.

The works include the very expressive piece Peter in Mourning, which almost appears modern; the wonderfully elegant Madonna with Christ Child from Brussels and a pietà made of clay. One of the most exquisite paintings from the Middle Ages will also be on display: The Holy Kinship by Geertgen tot Sint Jans from ca 1490.
