Bertien van Manen - Let's Sit Down Before We Go

This exhibition comprises a selection of more than 60 never-before-exhibited photographs by Dutch photographer Bertien van Manen taken in Russia and the surrounding countries between 1991 and 2009.

Humanism and intimacy

The title of the exhibition relates to a Russian tradition before embarking on a long journey whereby Russians sit down to take a moment to reflect on where they came from, where they are going and why. Van Manen spent a lot of time getting to know people she met (and photographed) on her travels and this is reflected in her photos, which are characterised by a distinct humanism and intimacy.
