Sixty-five years after the liberation of Auschwitz, The Hollandsche Schouwburg in Amsterdam commemorates the event with a unique multimedia presentation, Auschwitz Now - Three Generations On. The presentation runs from 26 January to 31 May 2010.
Emotional journey
The presentation comprises a travelogue produced by Judith Belinfante (1943, former curator of the Jewish Historical Museum) and her son Alexander David Jansen (1977) when they travelled to the camp in June 2009 to honour their ancestors who died in Auschwitz in 1944.
Mixed messages
Auschwitz Now features both text and images. Belinfante's brief, intense texts pay tribute to the victims and highlight the still-evident traces that betray their presence at the camp. In contrast, Jansen's photos suggest a more overt distance, pointing to a 'guilty' landscape that has absorbed the horrific events of the forties.
