Photographer and film producer Ari Marcopoulos (Amsterdam, 1957), left the Netherlands in 1980 and headed to the Big Apple. He rapidly made a name for himself as a respected figure in the documentation of alternative youth culture in the US.
New York, New York
This exhibition at Amsterdam's Foam Photography Museum includes photos from the burgeoning hip hop and underground art scene in 1980s New York, the snowboard and skate culture in the 90s and the multi-faceted depiction of his family in North Carolina during the last decade.
Intimacy
Marcopoulos' work is characterised by a strong sense of intimacy. He approaches his subjects intuitively and is always able to reach a personal note, whether he is photographing big names from the music or art world, or his own family. Marcopoulos' direct, extremely personal approach is softened by his subtle presentation.
Multimedia
The exhibition showcases a cross-section of this work from the last three decades, ranging from grainy black and white copies to impressive colour photos, videos and books. The exhibition runs from 27 February to 16 June, 2010.
