On 19 March 2010, the Commissioner to the Queen announced that the current Deputy Mayor, Lodewijk Asscher, has been sworn in as acting Mayor of Amsterdam until a new mayor is appointed. Long-standing mayor Job Cohen resigned last week to pursue national politics as candidate for leader of the Dutch Labour Party (PvdA).

Asscher (1974) sat for the Labour Party (PvdA) in the Amsterdam City Council from 2002 to 2006. On 20 April, 2006, Asscher became Alderman for Finance, Education and Youth Affairs as well as Deputy Mayor of Amsterdam.
