It was officially announced today, Sunday 31 May 2009, that the 93rd Giro d’Italia in 2010 will begin with an individual time trial in Amsterdam. Deputy Mayor Carolien Gehrels (Sports) of the City of Amsterdam, and Race Director Angelo Zomegnan reached final agreement just prior to the climax of this year’s Giro in Rome.
The first three stages of the prestigious Italian cycle race are being held in the Netherlands next year. The riders then continue in Italy. As well as Amsterdam, the “corsa rosa” is being hosted by Utrecht and Middelburg.
“It’s wonderful that we’ve finally succeeded in securing the start of the Giro d’Italia,” says Carolien Gehrels. “This has been a long-held wish for Amsterdam. The Giro is an exceptional event for us, comparable with the royal wedding in 2002.
It fits in perfectly with our Olympic ambitions, with a character, culture and scale ideal for Amsterdam. Next year the city is going to be swathed in orange on Queen’s Day and in pink on the day the Giro begins!"
The Giro d'Italia or “Tour of Italy” is one of the world’s leading long-distance cycle races. First ridden in 1909, it has been held every year since except during the two world wars. Like the other two great “tours” – the Tour de France and the Vuelta a España – the Giro lasts 23 days and usually consists of 21 stages. The race traditionally ends in Milan, but this year is an exception: because the event is celebrating its centenary, the 2009 finish is in Rome, the Italian capital.
