Amsterdam's Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra performed in New York City's Grand Central Subway Station on 17 February 2010.
To misquote Frank Sinatra, 'New York, New York, it's a wonderful town, The Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra play in a hole in the ground.' That's right - Amsterdam's very own Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra performed in New York City's Grand Central Subway Station on 17 February 2010.
The orchestra - in town to play the prestigious Carnegie Hall on February 16 and 17 - also played as part of Music Under New York, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority's initiative to present quality music to the commuting public.
Featuring the five members of the brass section of the orchestra, Wim van Hasselt - Trumpet; Bert Langenkamp - Trumpet; Jaap van der Vliet - Horn; Jörgen van Rijen - Trombone; Perry Hoogendijk - Tuba, the performance is of Samuel Scheidt's Three Canzonas.
The orchestra played at the Mezzanine at S Subway line entrance of the Grand Central - 42nd Street Subway Station.
In December 2008 leading classical music publication Gramophone Magazine ranked the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra as the 'top symphony orchestra in the world.'
The performance, in collaboration with MTA's initiative, celebrates The Netherlands Board of Tourism and Conventions' newest campaign to encourage travellers to Just be. In Holland. Also included in the campaign is a Holland-themed 'S' shuttle train running between Grand Central and Times Square as well as a nationwide contest with Dutch prizes to be won at www.holland.com.
