The Zuiderkerk was the first protestant church in Amsterdam and was built between 1603-1611 by Hendrick de Keyser. The building has not been used for church services since 1929, and it is now an information centre about construction projects, housing and public areas that belong to the Amsterdam Council.
Varied history
In its lifetime, the Zuiderkerk has served various purposes. It was once a storage facility for bibles and during the Starvation Winter (1944-1945) was also a mortuary temporarily. The church became the property of the Amsterdam Council in 1968 and was closed for a long time as the building structure required renovation.
Information Centre
The Zuiderkerk Information Centre provides information about Amsterdam’s public development works and is also an exhibition, meeting and congress location.
The church tower (Zuiderkerktoren) can be climbed if you participate in a guided tour.
