The Witsen house (Witsenhuis) was the residence of Willem Witsen, a wealthy Dutch artist. His wife bequeathed the house to the state, and the Witsen house is now a state-owned museum. Situated at Oosterpark 82, in Amsterdam’s Eastern district, the Witsen house has been restored to its original condition.
Literary fame
The Witsen house also offers temporary housing for writers. The Dutch writer Marga Minco lived here from 1949 to 1970. Among the later occupiers of the house were the writers Jan Kal and Thomas Rosenboom. The late-romanticist Dutch writer Nescio portrayed the main character of his story “Verliefdheid” (Being in love) as living in the Witsen house.
House contents
The Witsen house contains a style chamber, original drawing room of painter/etcher/photographer Willem Witsen (1860-1923) and paintings by his contemporaries. Also of interest is the furniture and wallpaper in the house designed by T. Nieuwenhuis (1897). Visitors need to make a written request to view the Witsen house.
