As soon as you go through the door of Van hier tot Tokio on the Rozengracht, you immediately step into the atmosphere of a Japanese garden. Via a couple of Shinto stepping stones ringed with white gravel, you step past granite lanterns from a Buddhist temple and some water stones into the shop itself. Here they sell antique Japanese furniture, lacquer work and scroll paintings from the end of the nineteenth century. There are also painted room screens and kitchen cupboards and lacquered trays, kimonos and bento (picnic boxes).
