Catholics will participate with the annual Stille Omgang (Silent Procession) that is reminiscent of the Miracle. Local Catholics commemorate the 1345 Miracle of Amsterdam with a silent nighttime procession through the city. The miracle of Amsterdam is based on a story of a dying man given bread in communion at his last rites. The dying man vomited up the bread. The purged host was tossed on the fire, but was found the next morning undamaged among the ashes, and the sick man is reputed to have recovered. The procession follows the road that pilgrims have used for centuries, called after the event the Holy Way in Dutch Heiligeweg. The route begins and ends at Spui, via Kalverstraat, Nieuwendijk, Prins Hendrikkade, Warmoesstraat and Nes.
