Rembrandt Square (Rembrandtplein) is named after the famous Dutch painter Rembrandt van Rijn. Built from the remnants of Amsterdam's old port, the square was originally known as the Botermarkt (Butter Market) and was established in 1668. These days it's a buzzing nightlife centre with various hotels, clubs and cafes.
A cast iron statue of Rembrandt stands in the middle of the square. It portrays the renowned early 19th century artist in a casual pose, as he watches visitors heading for entertainment at the square.
