Peace Church

Pijnackerstraat 9
1072 JS AMSTERDAM
Neighbourhood: Amsterdam

Amsterdam’s Peace Church (Vredeskerk) was consecrated in 1924 and its name is connected to the end of World War I. The church has a strong Art-deco feeling.

Architect
When the construction of the Vredeskerk started, Jos Bekkers, the architect was 31 years old. His aim was that everything on the altar could be seen – so no pillars blocking the view. Bekkers was strongly influenced by Pierre Cuypers, who built the Rijksmuseum and Central Station. For unknown reasons, Jos Bekkers was arrested in July 1944 by the Germans, and died in the Buchenwald concentration camp.
